Bob Jacobs (Valparaiso, Ind.) shot a final-round even-par 72 to win the Heron Creek Senior Invitational at Heron Creek Golf & Country Club in North Port, Fla.
In the second national senior rankings points event of 2021, the 56-year-old Jacobs held off Michael Hughett (Owasso, Okla.) by one shot after both players started the day a shot behind the overnight leader Marcus Beck (Tallahassee, Fla.).
Jacobs, who shared the lead after an opening-round 70, finished at 3-over 219. Hughett, who won the Dixie Senior Amateur to close out 2020, shot a 73 to finish solo second at 4 over.
Steve Groom (Raytown, Mo.) was third at 8 over, while Bob Bailey (Yorktown, Va.) and Brigham Gibbs (Salt Lake City, Utah) tied for fourth, another shot back.
Jacobs was playing in his first national senior points event after establishing a strong amateur record in Northwest Indiana, winning many tournaments including the 2018 Indiana Senior Open. Formerly the General Manager of Sand Creek Golf Club, he is now Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Indiana Beverage.
In the Super Senior division, another Indiana native, Robin Rubrecht (Newburgh, Ind.), took the title by four shots over Robert Hess (Casselberry, Fla.) with a 1-under 215 total. Jerry Hudgins (Tyler, Texas) finished third, four shots back.
Jim Kamis (Marietta, Ga.) rode a first-round 68 to a two-shot win over Pete McDade (Lakeland, Fla.) in the Legends division. Dave Bates (Newburgh, Ind.) was third.
Walt Martin (St. Augustine, Fla.) picked up his second-straight Super Legends win. Last week, the 80-year-old started 2021 with an eight-shot victory at the Gateway Senior, and he made it 2-for-2 with a three-shot win over Richard van Leuvan (Atlanta, Ga.).
The Senior Florida Swing continues with the Golfweek Senior Player of the Year Classic at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, starting January 16.
