The year of the final round comeback in amateur golf continues.
Today at the Berkeley Cup in Georgia, Ryan Trocchio stepped to the first tee playing four groups in front of the leaders, and trailing by a full nine shots in front of leader Taylor Smith. By the end of the day, he hadn't only made up those shots, he had won by a margin of five shots.
That's a 14 stroke turnaround!
Trocchio couldn't have possibly known he was about to shoot the round of his life. But what unfolded was a red hot ball striking and putting day that led to a competitive course record of 11-under 61. Posting 10-under for the 54-hole tournament, it was hard for the leaders to do anything but watch and get passed.
The lead group of Taylor Smith, Chris Waters and Keith Guest all finished at 5 under, which tied for second. To put Trocchio’s score in perspective, only 7 players finished the event under par.
The senior division was up for grabs all day with the final group of Bob Royak, Billy Mitchell, and Tim Slough within one shot. Throughout the day, none of the players could separate themselves as during the back nine there was a three way tie at 1-over.
Royak, the 2019 US Senior Am champion, was able to claw back to even par and hold off Mitchell and Slough for the win. Mitchell and Slough finished tied for second at 1-over.
The final round kicked off this morning after the course received 4 inches of rain overnight. Thanks to superintendent Chris Purvis and staff, the course was ready for play and with little noticeable damage.
This was the inaugural edition of The Berkeley Cup. Mid-Am and Senior players from seven states competed at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Georgia. Both divisions played from the same tees, so the overall champion can come from either category.View results for The Berkeley Cup
