2020 is offering unique playing opportunities for collegiate golfers as just two Power 5 conferences (the Big 12 and SEC) have elected to play fall golf.

Among a list of near countless events that have opened up for collegiate amateurs, the Golf Association of Pennsylvania Open was somewhat uncharted water for five collegians teeing it up in the event this week.

“I had a chance to play well in this event and potentially win [William Hyndman, III Player of the Year]. It was definitely a goal of mine, to at least be in contention,” Liberty senior Zaxh Barbin told the GAP.

Unfortunately for Barbin, it was not meant to be. His name was at the bottom of the leaderboard following Monday’s first round with a 10-over 82. Making the cut, Barbin improved slightly with a final round 78 but still finished in last place following the cut to 60 players plus ties after Monday’s round.

From the bottom of the leaderboard to the top, amatuers littered the leaderboard all the way up to third place.

Jeff Obserg, fresh off a win at the Philadelphia Mid-Amateur which completed his GAP career grand slam, knotted a third place finish with rounds of 72 and 68 for a tournament total of 140. Tied alongside fellow amateur Andrew Mason the two were just two shots off the lead and eventual winner, Michael Little.

Also clocking top-10 finishes were Connor McNicholas and Troy Vannucci. Both amateurs tallied a 2-under 142 total and tied for sixth.

Jalen Griffin, Michael Brown Jr., and William Davenport all secured T-9 finishes at 1-under 143.

In all, 22 of 28 amateurs made the cut and seven amateurs finished inside the top-10.
