Keith Decker was three shots down heading into the final day, but dug deep at Evergreen CC
If you've won a tournament four straight times, you've put a lot of good memories and a whole lot of confidence in your mental bank.
So it was for Keith Decker this week at Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, Va., where the Martinsville native overcame a three-shot deficit and won his fifth straight Dave King Senior Invitational.
Decker's ownership of this tournament was threatened by Matt Sughrue (Arlington, Va.), the 2016 U.S. Senior runner-up whose 65 in the second round gave him a three-shot lead.
But Decker was able to record the low final round, a 4-under 68, to clip Sughrue by a single shot and extend his winning streak. Decker finished with rounds of 68-72-68 and an 8-under-par total.
Rich Buckner (Gainesville, Va.), whose first-round 67 gave him the lead, finished third at 4 under par. Mike Mercier (Juno Beach, Fla.) and Jim Nirich (Catlett, Va.) tied for fifth at one over.
In the Super Senior division, John Armstrong (Frostburg, Md.) shot a final-round 70 to overtake Paul Schlachter (Bridgeville, Pa.) and win by two shots at 6 under par.
Six under was also the winning total for Ronald Janicki (Woodbridge, Va.) in the Legends division, as he finished five shots clear of George Washburn (Frederick, Md.).
Marty O'Connell (Hinsdale, Ill.) won the Super Legends division with a 4-under total, three shots ahead of Peter Jacobi (Arlington, Va.).
