The Golf Coaches Association of America announced a new option for collegiate players during COVID-19
The GCAA announced the launch of a new amateur series available to collegiate men and women.
"We are excited to provide these additional tournament opportunities for college golfers to compete given the difficult times we faced in our sport last semester and anticipate facing again in the fall,” GCAA President John Kennaday said in a press release.
"We recognize that fall events and budgets through the end of the year and beyond are likely to be significantly reduced or canceled. The Amateur Series will give both men’s and women’s collegiate players affordable opportunities to compete in the absence of traditional college competition.”
Partnering with GolfStat, the GCAA will host 11 WAGR ranked events beginning August 15 at Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma where the GCAA is headquartered.
The two-day 54 hole tournaments will feature both men and women who are currently on a varsity collegiate roster as well as incoming freshmen. There will be men’s and women’s tees, but they will all compete against each other, truly pitting the best against the best.
The events will take place either on a Saturday/Sunday or Monday/Tuesday, allowing the most opportunities for student-athletes while they navigate through their education during the pandemic.
“Understanding the new challenges that golf tournaments face today, the safety of our student-athletes, Rules officials, staff, and friends will be our foremost concern, these events will be totally paperless and hopefully provide the blueprint for the future of college golf,” said GCAA CEO Gregg Grost.
