Toyota World Junior Cup: Flores Leads USA to Sweep

Erik Flores of Grass Valley, CA leads the USA and wins individual honors at 20-under-par

TOYOTA CITY, Japan (June 24, 2005) — The United States (824, -40) once again had the low round of the day at the par 72 Chukyo Golf Club Ishino Course in Toyota City, Aichi prefecture, Japan, to repeat as Toyota World Junior Golf Cup Champion. Led by three top-10 individual finishers - including winner Erik Flores (268, -20) - the Americans claimed the trophy by 12 strokes over Columbia (836, -28). Flores finished six shots ahead of Japan’s Yuki Usami (274, -14) to take home the individual honor. Though in second-place coming into the day, England (839, -25) fell to third following a final round 214. Argentina (845, -19) maintained the fourth position, followed by Chinese Taipei (851, -13), Japan (854, -10), New Zealand (856, -8), Spain (863, -1) and Belgium (864, E). The teams slipping above par were Canada (868, +4), Mexico (870, +6), India (872, +8), South Africa (882, +18) and Zimbabwe (910, +46). Flores and Usami were trailed by Columbia’s Andres Achavarria (275, -13) and Juan Pablo Candela (276, -12), Ming Chuan-Chen of Chinese Taipei (276, -12), England’s Daniel Willet (276, -12), Alan Wagner of Argentina (278, -10), New Zealand’s Jae An (277, -9) and Americans Matthew Swan (277, -9) and Michael Green (278, -8). The final American player - Nicholas Smith - finished the tournament at 2-over (290). "As repeating champions, it wasn’t a very good feeling having to give that trophy back at the opening ceremony.
