Like the originals, the new, raw-steel version of the JAWS MD5 wedges are all about the grooves
Callaway has released a new, raw-steel version of its JAWS MD5 wedges that have been preferred by its stable of touring pros. The original versions of the wedges were unveiled last fall, and were designed by master wedge maker Roger Cleveland, promising a new level of grip and spin from all types of lies.

The grooves in the JAWS MD5 wedges are more V-shaped and have a tighter edge radius, which allow the face to "grab" the cover of the ball -- this is what promotes greater spin for greater control around the greens and on approach shots.
Grooves and microgrooves (Callaway photo)But it's not just the grooves, it's also what Callaway calls "microgrooves", which protrude from the face between the grooves. Combine those with soft feel from the 8620 carbon steel construction and Callaway feels that they have maximized their ability to spin the ball.
Touring pros prefer the raw-steel finish because of reduced glare, the "rusted" look that emerges with exposure to air and moisture, and because the raw steel hides the marks usually left behind when a grinding wheel is used to adjust the club by removing material from the heel, toe, or flange.
Callaway is offering the JAWS MD5 Raw wedges in four sole configurations:
C – A moderately wide sole with relief in the heel and toe areas. (62 degrees)
S – A standard, straight and versatile sole for players who rarely open the club face. (50-60 degrees)
X – A high-bounce version of the C Grind for players who have a steeper angle of attack into the ball. (54-60 degrees)
T – A new option for recreational players, the T grind has a crescent-shaped sole and a thicker topline that elevates the center of gravity and makes it easier to flight approach shots down. (58 and 60 degrees)
The Callaway JAWS MD5 Raw wedges are available June 4 for a retail price of $159.99 each. Available in even lofts from 50 to 62 degrees for right-handed players; 52, 56 and 60 degrees for left-handed players.
