The Zoar Memorial played at Zoar Golf Club in Dover, Ohio just a few hours south of Cleveland. We've never covered it before. But with many tournaments being cancelled due to Coronavirus, AmateurGolf.com is seeking out hidden-gems that are powering through and running their tournaments (with the proper COVID-19 protocol, of course.) It seems that the Zoar Memorial is one of those.

The tournament is played each year in memoriam of a golfer from the region who recently has passed. This year's honoree was Harold Shade. More on him after we review the weekend's competition.

First off, the course. Zoar G.C. played tough both days with three golfers finishing tied at even-par 144.

And nobody knows that better than course superintendent Eric Crone.

Crone overcame a two-shot deficit, beginning the day one-over-par alongside four other golfers. With a final round of 1-under 71, Crone found himself in a playoff with day-one leader Scottie Jones and fellow competitor Steven Nutter. With Jones losing his two-stroke lead and Nutter playing consistently over the 36-hole championship, Crone was the one who walked away with a playoff win.

2020 HONOREE
This year’s honoree was Harold Shade. Shade -- a math and physical education teacher -- coached basketball, baseball, and golf during his tenure at Scio High School. The school is located just 37 minutes southeast of Dover, Ohio. While furthering his career in education at campuses across the region, Shade was an avid golfer, winning eight state titles and setting two local course records with 63's at Atwood and Green Valley golf courses.
