The high school junior wins his first amateur event on a perfect weekend at the Southern California coastal gem

Jack Townsend shot the round of the weekend, a 5-under 67, to win the Coronado City Championship at Coronado Municipal Golf Course.

Townsend, a high school junior from San Diego, started the day two shots behind overnight leader Amadeo Figus, but overcame the deficit to win by two shots at 7-under 137. Figus closed with a 71 to finish solo second, two shots back.

Forbes Collins II (70) was third at 2 under, with Adam Power (71) and Simone Colozza (69) rounding out the top five.

Last year's champion Mark Williams had a pair of 73s to finish tied for 8th in his title defense.

In the Senior division, Jon Reilly beat John Hoffman on the first playoff hole after both players finished at 1-under 143. They were seven shots ahead of the third-place finisher, Tony Ralph.

  • DAY ONE RECAP

Day one of the Coronado City Championship is in the books, with Amadeo Figus taking a two-shot lead with a 4-under 68. Jack Townsend is in solo second at two under, followed by Blake Iwaisako at one under par.

Despite playing just under 6600 yards in otherwise good scoring conditions, the course held its own on Saturday, with just three of 65 players posting under-par rounds (and only one of the 26 seniors).

AmateurGolf.com founder Pete Wlodkowski is in the field and offered these notes:

"Beautiful crystal clear day with high of 82 degrees. Crossing the iconic San Diego Coronado Bridge the views were amazing from Downtown San Diego and Cabrillo Point to the Coronado Islands. Pins tucked, greens and fairways in the best shape I've seen."

Jon Reilly shot a 1-under 71 to take a one-shot lead over John Hoffman, with Tony Ralph another shot back.
