Qualifying is ongoing at 29 sites around the country. See who made it to Quail Creek in Naples, Fla.

For the third time in its six-year history, the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball will be played in Florida. The 2020 tournament will take place at Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Fla., on April 25-29.

Qualifying is ongoing at 29 sites around the country.

March 13

University of Georgia teammates Jenny Bae and Jo Hua Hung won the Dickson, Tenn. qualifier by six shots, blitzing the field at GreyStone GC.

At Gus Wortham Golf Course in Houston, Remington Isaac & Texas State commit Halle Whitney medaled by three shots with a 66. Reagan Gray and Elina Sinz, committed to Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Auburn, respectively, punched their ticket to the championship by winning a four-team playoff.

The team of Huai-Chien Hsu and Chun-Wei Wu, both from Chinese Taipei, earned medalist honors over the team of high school twins, Janae and Jasmine Leovao from Oceanside, Calif.

January 27

For the second straight year, teenagers Abbey Schutte and Kendall Todd are heading to the championship, after shooting a 62 at Pebblecreek Golf Resort in Goodyear, Arizona. The local products made match play last year at the ages of 14 and 16. Abbey Schutte is the oldest daughter of 1992 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Warren Schutte.

Five teams advanced from the Murrieta, Calif. qualifier, led by the Irvine teenage duo of Jennifer Cai and Leigh Chien with a 2-under 70 at Bear Creek Golf Club. The final two teams advanced through a 3-for-2 playoff.

Mid-amateurs Marissa Mar (San Francisco, Calif.) and Lila Thomas (Dallas, Texas) shot a 3-under 68 at Mira Vista CC in Forth Worth, Texas to earn medalist honors. Both Mar and Thomas made match play at last year's U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur and Mar made the semifinals in 2017. The two other qualifying teams were each comprised of members representing Dallas Baptist University.

Florida State commit Taylor Roberts teamed up with fellow Floridian and Notre Dame commit Chloe Schiavone to earn co-medalist honors at Columbia (S.C.) Country Club. The pair shot a 5-under 67 to tie another team of highly-regarded juniors, Duke commit Phoebe Brinker and University of Florida commit Maisie Filler.

Tennessee junior standout Kynadie Adams can add another USGA start to her resume next spring now that she has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball with partner Breyana Matthews of Scottsdale, Ariz. Adams also played the Four-Ball a year ago, advancing to the first round of match play with partner Rachel Kuehn, who is now in her freshman season at Wake Forest.

Two formidable teams emerged from qualifier at Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby, Ore. Oregonians Amanda Jacobs and Gretchen Johnson, two U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur veterans, took the top qualifying spot with a 68. Johnson is the reigning Oregon Women’s Mid-Amateur champion and also defeated Jacobs in the final match of the PNGA Women’s Mid-Am to win that title in July.

Behind Jacobs and Johnson, two-time defending U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur champion Lara Tennant combined with seven-time USGA champion Ellen Port to take the second qualifying spot.

Sisters Molly and Morgan Smith, who play out of Vesper Country Club in Westford, Mass., have built a reputation as some of the strongest competitors in the Bay State despite being only 14 and 15, respectively. At Franklin (Mass.) Country Club, they earned medalist honors by coming in ahead of 12 other teams in the Women’s Four-Ball qualifier.

“To go out there and qualify, it’s really incredible,” said Molly, a sophomore at Westford Academy. “But to be medalists is like, really cool.”

The Smiths carded a 3-under 68 to best the field by two strokes. Molly, a freshman at Westford Academy, carried the pair on the back nine, making birdie on the 16th and 17th and shooting par on 18 to close out their victory.

Their parents, Phil and Lynn Smith, were alongside to caddie. Phil Smith won the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur in 2007.

The Smith sisters aren’t the youngest qualifiers in the brief history of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball, which began in 2015, as several 11- and 12-years-olds have competed. However, if the Smiths won, they’d be the youngest champions in the history of the event.

“The goal is to make it through to match play,” Molly said. “I think we can do it.”

Any team who looks across the bracket and sees two USGA champions staring back should feel nervous. That will be the case concerning the team of Kelsey Chugg and Julia Potter-Bobb, who have three U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur titles between them. The two combined for a 68 at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course in Bristol, Ill., to take the first of two qualifying spots.

Ina Kim-Schaad, the most recently crowned USGA champion, has booked her ticket into another USGA championship. Kim-Schaad, who won the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur last month, joined forces with Tara Fleming for a 68 at Suffield (Conn.) Country Club to take the only qualifying spot.

Speaking of U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur winner, four-time champion Meghan Stasi also secured another trip to the Women’s Four-Ball, and with a very familiar partner. Stasi and Dawn Woodard have played this event together every year since the inaugural tournament in 2015. They combined for a 69 at Stonebridge Golf Club in Stillwater, Minn., that earned them the only qualifying spot at the site.

A pair of women’s golf veterans led the way at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro, N.C. Tara Joy-Connelly, who has played more than 30 USGA championships, paired with Courtney McKim, a lifelong amateur who was a member of the Alabama team that won the 2012 NCAA Women’s Championship, combined for a 67 that left them with medalist honors.

Faith Choi

Faith Choi isn’t likely to be replaced in U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball lore anytime soon, what with her name down alongside Aneka Seumanutafa’s for the record 12-under 60 they recorded in the opening round of last spring’s Four-Ball. The pair broke the championship record by four shots with that round.

Choi has qualified for the 2020 Women’s Four-Ball, even though she did it alongside a different partner. This time, Choi combined with another Maryland native, Bailey Davis, for a 66 that left them tied for medalist honors.

They were able to hold off USGA veterans Katie Miller and Lauren Greenlief (a former U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur winner) for one of two qualifying spots out of Lehigh Country Club in Allentown, Pa.

Kaitlyn Schroeder, winner of the Florida Girls Junior and a high school freshman, partnered with Lauren Clark at Vinoy Golf Club in St. Petersburg, Fla., to take one of four available qualifying spots. The two teens tied USF players Ramya Meenakshisundaram and Jessica Whitting at 67 for co-medalist honors.

Haley Greb

University of Tulsa teammates Haley Greb and Tsai-Ching Tseng took the only qualifying spot at Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club with their red-hot round of 62. Interestingly, the pair had to beat a pair of teammates in Taylor Dobson and Lilly Thomas (who had 68) as well as their coach Annie Young and her teammate Michaela Dierinzo, who also had 68. Young is a former USGA champion herself, having won the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links in Sunriver, Ore.
