A little motivation from last year's big win helped the Amateurs retain the Cup

Carlsbad, Calif. (October 13, 2019) - Heading into the singles matches needing just four points to secure the San Diego Cup on Sunday, the amateur team continued their strong play in the Ryder Cup-style matches on the Omni La Costa Resort Champions Course to retain the Cup and tying the overall series 23-23-2.

The San Diego Cup features the top 12 PGA Class A Professionals competing against the top 12 amateur players in San Diego County in a team competition similar to the Ryder Cup with each match worth one point. Session 1 is Pinehurst Format (6 points), Session 2 is Four-Ball (6 points), and Session 3 is Individual Match Play (12 points). The Amateur Team won last year at Carlton Oaks, 15-9, a win that halted the professional winning streak of four consecutive wins (2014 – 2017), the longest streak for either side in the history of the event.

The amateurs earned 7 points Sunday, which more than enough points in the singles match to easily wrap up the victory. The amateur team relied heavily on four rookies this year, who earned a combined 10 out of 15.5 points.

Amateur team rookie Geoffry Shaw, a former Texas A&M standout, earned three full points, including an exciting singles match win over noted Coronado Golf Course head Professional Brian Smock. Taking a point from Smock – a multiple top-10 finisher on The Nationwide Tour (now the Korn Ferry Tour) and two-time PGA Championship participant – in match play is no easy task. Shaw’s putter caught fire down the stretch and he birdied Nos. 14, 15, and the iconic par-3 16th hole on the Champions Course to close out the match. Long time La Costa Member and Amateur team rookie David Oas also earned a full 3 points while providing valuable course knowledge to the team over the weekend.

This win marks the second consecutive victory for the amateurs against the San Diego Professionals. The series is now tied.

Another notable performance on the amateur side came from Craig Davis, 2019 Senior British Amateur Champ and three-time Southern California Senior Champion. Davis birdied Nos. 6, 7 and 8 on the front nine at La Costa and never looked backed. With a final tap-in birdie on 15, Davis, who plays out of San Diego Country Club, closed out Torrey Pines Professional Chris Lempa 4&3

A notable performance on the professional side came from Mark Geddes, who helped earned three full points for the Professionals. Geddes was 7-under par in his singles match taking down top Southern California Mid-Am and former University of California Santa Barbara player Joe Ryon 3&2.
