Randy Haag wins his fourth Wine Country Cup in the event's seven-year history while Jeff Kier takes net flight and Herb Jensen wins senior
NOVATO, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2008)-- What is it about the StoneTree Golf Club that has led to Burlingame's Randy Haag to win four of the seven amateurgolf.com Wine Country Cups held at the course?
"It's all about patience," said Haag, the reigning amateurgolf.com Tournament Series champion. "You know going into a tournament at StoneTree that even par is a good score. I've always been pretty good on tougher tracks, USGA venues. You have to elevate your level of 'one shot at a time' and not let a bad shot derail you."
Haag practiced what he preached on Sunday when he four-putted the 7th hole for double-bogey, then made another double on the 14th, but was still able to finish at even-par for the second straight day and take the title by three strokes over Erick Thorson.
"It was a weird 72," said Haag. "I had a few blow-ups, but was able to cover those with birdies. That's the thing with StoneTree, if you have a mental lapse for a second, it can bite you."
Westlake Village's Erick Thorson finished in second place at 147, while Colin Peck, who held a two-stroke lead going into the final day after firing a 2-under-70 in Round 1 ran into some trouble and finished at 148, good for third.
In the senior flight, a strong finishing kick from Herb Jensen of Carmichael was enough to emerge from the middle of the pack and take a five-stroke victory over Napa's Frank Abbott. Jensen finished with an even-par 72 for a total of 148. Sherman Haggerty, coming off two knee replacements, led the field going into the final day with a 72, but slipped to third.
The net division was taken by Sacramento's Jeff Kier, the only golfer to finish in the red at 2-under-142. He was trailed by Jesse White, a StoneTree Player's Club member, who may have gotten some extra motivation due to the club's decision to count the Wine Country Cup as a points event leading to their player-of-the-year race.

-A special thanks to StoneTree head pro Pat Jones and his great staff who kept the tournament running without a hitch for the seventh straight year
