With the football season officially over and the snow covering many of the courses in the Northeast finally starting to thaw out, we at amateurgolf.com thought it would be a good time to whet the appetite of our Northeastern readers by providing a preview of some of the tournaments that will be getting under way in their region sooner than they know it.
We’ll take a look first at the amateur majors that will be contested in the region, starting with the Monroe Invitational, held June 12-15 at the Monroe Country Club in Pittsford, NY. Last year saw Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson start his successful Walker Cup campaign with a record-setting win, finishing at 11-under par.
Johnson added another major victory from the Northeast region to his resume in 2007, this time it was a win at the Northeast Amateur Invitational, which will be contested June 18-21 this season at the Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I.
This historic tournament has seen such past winners as Ben Crenshaw, Hal Sutton and David Duval, and with Johnson already earning more than a quarter million dollars in his first month on the PGA Tour, the tourney seems to have padded its reputation for a place to see future pros in action.
Heading north, the Porter Cup is well known as one of the most prestigious amateur events in the country, with some putting it behind only the U.S. Amateur and the Western Amateur. Last year, Brian Harman carded the summer's second record-setting major performance, finishing at 22-under-par. This year's tourney will be held, as always, at the Niagara Falls Country Club July 23-26.
The Sunnehanna Amateur, held at the Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, PA, is another of the region's tournaments that regularly draws a strong national field. Last year's event was the coming-out party for Southern California high schooler Rickie Fowler, who held off Peter Uihlein by a stroke in his successful bid to become the youngest-ever U.S. Walker Cupper.
This year's Sunnehanna Am will be held June 5-8.
One of the premier and most unique events is the George A. Crump Memorial, better known as the Crump Cup, held at the ultra-exclusive Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey. The final day of this event is the only time the public is welcome at Pine Valley. Last year's gallery witnessed Michael McCoy win his third title in the past four years.
The favorites to win the New England Amateur will likely be one of the Paladino brothers, Brent (the reigning champ) or Cody (runner-up in the U.S. Publinx) or Frank Vana Jr., the eight-time Massachusetts player of the year. This year's tournament will be held July 22-24 at Charles River Country Club in Newton, Mass.
Moving on to the junior events, we find the only USGA event being held in the region this year, the Girls' Junior Championship, which will be held July 21-26 at the Hartford Golf Club. Kristen Park, 15, will be defending her title as one of the youngest-ever winners of this event.
Lastly, we take a look at one of the top junior majors, the International Junior Masters, which is open to boys 13-18 and will be held at the East Aurora Country Club in New York, June 23-27.
