Troy Spencer wins his second event of the season

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (Feb. 3, 2008)-- Unseasonably warm February weather, with temperatures in the low-60's both days, greeted the nearly fifty members that competed in the 36-hole The Winternational Junior Series, with temperatures in the low-60s both days.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Troy Spencer of Archdale, NC took advantage of the conditions by finishing at even-par 144, good for a one-stroke victory over won first round leader Jonathan McCurry of Sanford NC. Spencer, a high school senior, shot two under par 34 on his first nine of the last round to pull ahead by one over McCurry.  Both players struggled on the final nine holes but Spencer was able to hold on to claim victory, his second of the young season.

McCurry’s opening 69 was the low round for the tournament. Tied for third were two former multiple Winternational All American’s Hunter Howell, from Raeford NC, and Michael McGowan, from Sothern Pines, NC. They shot identical 4-over-par totals of 148. In fifth place was Robb Saleeby of Raleigh NC, with a 6-over-par 150.

James Bramlett, of Charlotte NC, who lost in a heartbreaking playoff two weeks ago, prevailed for the victory in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. Bramlett, a sophomore, found himself one shot behind after the opening round but his 75 on Sunday earned him a two shot victory. In second place, from Cary NC, with a 77-73--150 total, was Andrew Knox. Third place went to the first round leader, Charlie Killian, from Raleigh NC. Killian shot even par on Saturday for the low round of his division and followed it with a 79 for a 151 total. In third place was Beau Cutts from Henderson NC, who is a two time winner. Tied for fifth place were Alex Wise, from Eden NC, and Charles Valluzzo, from Mt. Pleasant SC.

The Girls’ Division saw its first two time winner crowned on Sunday, when Brianna Clemmons, from Oak Ridge NC, shot  81-80--161. Clemmons was tied after the first round with Katie Kirk, from Davidson NC, but fell behind after Sunday’s front nine by three shots. Clemmons’ fine 38 on the final nine holes allowed her to overtake her rival for a three shot win. Kirk finished with 81-83=164 to capture the runner up position.
