Dixie Amateur: Lingmerth, Thompson are winners

David Lingmerth of Sweden defeats Stephan Gross in four-hole playoff to win men's division while 12-year-old phenom Alexis Thompson cruises to an 8-stroke victory in women's

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2008)-- A pair of Europeans needed a four-hole playoff to decide the 84th annual Dixie Amateur, but in the end it was Sweden's David Lingmerth taking the victory over Germany's Stephan Gross. Both finished at 1-under-par 283 after 72 holes.

12-year-old Alexis Thompson, seemingly following in the footsteps of the LPGA Tour's Morgan Pressel (and older brother Nicholas, who plays the Nationwide Tour) won the Women's Division by a whopping eight strokes over 15-year-old Shelby Coyle.

In 2007, Thompson drew national attention when she broke Pressel's record as the youngest contestant in the US Women's Open by 7 months -- just out of sixth grade when she shot 71-72 to gain her place in the field. (She missed the cut at Pine Needles with rounds of 76-82.)
