Stutts, Summers combine to win Anderson Memorial

Chris Stutts and Stephen Summers took down a pair of past champs (and Winged Foot locals) to win the Anderson Memorial.
A pair of past champions took Chris Stutts and Stephen Summers to the final hole at Winged Foot for the championship match of the Anderson Memorial, but Stutts and Summers claimed the title by a slim 1-up margin. It’s a first in this event for both men.
The two played the week at famed Winged Foot representing Silo Ridge Field Club in Amenia, New York. They took the 14th seed on a 16-team match-play bracket and fought their way through from there.
On Saturday morning, Stutts and Summers defeated Jason May and Jimmy Chestnut, 4 and 3, in their semifinal match. Their reward was a date with Winged Foot locals and 2016 Anderson Memorial champions Troy and Nicholas.
Stutts is a former Arizona State All-American and Whisper Rock Golf Club Champion. He is the Senior Vice President of Global Sales Operations for Discovery Land Company based in Palm Beach, Fla. Summers, of Dallas, is a former winner of the prestigious Crump Cup (2011).
SATURDAY MATCH RECAP
After two rounds of match play at Winged Foot, only four sides remain in the Anderson Memorial. Among the remaining individuals are Chris Troy and James Nicholas, who are trying to win this title for the first time since 2016.
They are Winged Foot locals, and won two matches at the top of the bracket on Saturday. First, Troy and Nicholas took down Andrew Lane and Griffin McQuilling from Garden City Golf Club, then they moved on to Thomas Parker and Danny Young from Pines Needles Golf Club.
Troy and Nichols face two more matches on Sunday, beginning with Dylan Gergen and Mike Fiedler of Medakota Country Club.
The remaining match will feature Jason May and Jimmy Chestnut from Detroit Golf Club against Chris Stutts and Stephen Summers from Silo Ridge Field Club. May and Chestnut took down defending champions Brett Boner and Stephen Woodard of Carolina Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.
STROKE PLAY RECAP
After 36 holes at Winged Foot for the Anderson Memorial, locals Chris Troy and James Nicholas topped the leaderboard. The two Winged Foot members will take the No. 1 seed on the match-play bracket as the format switches for the weekend.
Troy and Nicholas combined to go 8 under. After an even-par 70 to open, the two rebounded with 62, the lowest round of the day on Friday.
Nicholas is a rising senior on the Yale men’s golf team who briefly played football at the university. He is multi-talented as an athlete, and also was the sixth all-time leading scorer in New York high school hockey history. Troy is a former Cornell golfer.
The two won this title in 2016.
At the top of the bracket on Saturday morning, Troy and Nicholas will meet Andrew Lane and Griffin McQuilling, who play out of Garden City Golf Club.
Jason May and Jimmy Chestnut, a Detroit Golf Club-based partnership, finished stroke play right behind Troy and Nicholas and will take the No. 2 spot on the bracket. They face Mark McGowan and Matthew Mattare – who reached the third round of the U.S. Mid-Amateur – on Saturday.
Defending champions Stephen Woodard and Brett Boner, runner-up at the U.S. Mid-Amateur, were sixth on the stroke-play leaderboard. The pair from Carolina Golf Club will play Aengus McAllister and Jeff Hamilton on Saturday.
