Palm Beach Tournament of Champions: A Tie
NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 31, 2007)-- Eoghan O'Connell of Palm Beach Gardens and Deron Zendt of Jupiter, the winners of the Palm Beach County Golf Association Tournament of Champions for the past two years, shared honors Wednesday in the eighth annual playing of the tourney.
O'Connell, managing general partner of The Fox Club in Palm City, and Zendt, an assistant superintendent at McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound, matched three over par 75's as 30-mile-per-hour winds from Tropical Storm Noel swept across the Lost Tree Club which was playing 6,673 yards.
O'Connell won in 2005, Zendt last year, on scores of 65 and 70, respectively, both at McArthur. O'Connell re-qualified after winning the Dodge Four-Ball, Zendt as the defending champion.
Only two other players broke 80. Tim Cox of Palm Beach Gardens shot 78 and Woody Greene of Boynton Beach had 79.
O'Connell won two skins, at the par-3 11th and par-4 17th, both with birdies. Other skins winners were Rick Wentworth, Stuart, No. 1, birdie-3; Zendt, No. 9, birdie-3; and Matt Ribakoff, Jupiter, No. 18, eagle-3.
Ten of the 25 players who were eligible competed in the event. Winners of PBCGA tournaments since the 2006 T-of-C were invited.
Only two tournaments remain on the PBCGA schedule this year: Nov. 18, Sheehan Realty Finale Four-Ball, Abacoa GC, and Dec. 3, Sam Smidt Cup, Emerald Dunes GC.
