Tony Romo posted a 15-over total, which was identical to last year's score, and finished 36 holes one spot out of last

Tony Romo can’t seem to get past the 36-hole mark in his –admittedly limited –PGA experience. For the second year in a row, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback played the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, and he is once again out before the weekend.

Romo, who fared well in regional amateur events in 2018 as well as in the Wisconsin State Amateur (T-13), finished next-to-last after rounds of 79-80. His 15-over total is identical to his score at this event last year, which left him in last place.

On Friday, Romo had one birdie (at the par-4 eighth) but too many big numbers to go with it. He also had five bogeys, in addition to back-to-back double bogeys at Nos. 15 and 16.

Romo, 38, who works as an analyst for NFL on CBS, will reportedly tee it up at next month’s AT&T Byron Nelson on another sponsor exemption.

On the subject of Romo, Golf Channel cleared up questions this week about why Romo’s amateur status wasn’t compromised by endorsing Sketchers golf shoes in a TV ad. The difference between Romo and, say, Lucy Li (who spent much of the early part of 2019 embroiled in a USGA investigation that resulted from her appearance in an Apple Watch ad campaign) is that Romo is known first as a professional football player, and thus uses that reputation to sell the product.

In its report, Golf Channel contacted Craig Winter, the USGA’s senior director of rules and amateur status, who explained that “the Rules of Amateur Status prohibit an amateur golfer from being part of such promotions only when he or she has ‘golf skill.’ In the case of Tony Romo, while he plays at a high level, he is not considered to have ‘golf skill’ as they are defined in the rules.”
