South Carolina was 27 under for the 54-hole event in their home state, and claimed three of the top four players
It was almost like South Carolina was playing a different course than the rest of the field this week. Playing in their home state, the team more than took advantage of familiarity, going 27 under at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C., for a 35-shot win at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
South Carolina closed with a 4-under 276 on Tuesday, which was the team’s highest round of the week. Wind was a factor, and no other team in the field was able to get under par.
Senior Will Miles led the Gamecocks, going wire-to-wire for his first collegiate win. He shot 13-under 197 (-13) for a nine-shot victory over a pair of senior teammates, Scott Stevens and Ryan Stachler. Caleb Proveaux finished in the top 5.
"It was unbelievable – a great team victory," said head coach Bill McDonald. "Four guys in the top-five which was pretty special for us. Then Will Miles – I can't say enough great things about him and how well he played. I couldn't be happier for him with how hard he's worked and to see it pay off. Not just Will, but our (three) seniors in general. They've just been incredible leaders and put in a ton of work – really cool seeing it all come together this week"
Behind South Carolina, Virginia and Alabama-Birmingham tied for second at 8 over. Clemson was fourth at 15. Alabama-Birmingham’s William Walker III also shared second individually.
