Major shakeup in penultimate Arnold Palmer Cup ranking
(L-R) Peter Kuest, Mariel Galdiano, Chun An Yu, Frida Kinhult
NORMAN, Okla. (February 28, 2019) – The penultimate Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking for the 2019 matches was released today by the Golf Coaches Association of America, with a major shakeup among all four ranking categories.
The decision by several top players not to participate in this year's matches has reshuffled the deck and has landed a group of new faces atop the standings.
The last ranking saw
familiar names top the standings, such as World #1 and U.S. Amateur champ Viktor Hovland, and his Oklahoma State teammate Matthew Wolff, winner of four straight events this season.
But with Oklahoma State deciding not to participate in this year's matches, Hovland and Wolff will not be in attendance at the Alotian Club when the matches commence on June 7.
Others have also withdrawn from the competition, including USC's Justin Suh and Cal's Collin Morikawa who held down the second and third spots in the last U.S. Men's ranking.
The new number ones include
Peter Kuest (BYU),
Chun An Yu (Arizona State),
Mariel Galdiano (UCLA), and
Frida Kinhult (Florida State).
The top six golfers from the final ranking from both the United States and International men and women - 12 total golfers - will be among the 24 individuals selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup.
The remaining six men’s and women’s spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The balance of the International team will include the men’s and women’s winners of The R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections, and a coaches pick.
Using Golfstat’s NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
Arnold Palmer Cup teams will be unveiled live on Golf Channel’s Golf Central on Wednesday, March 6 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.
