Arizona State players looked sharp Monday in their first start of the spring season, taking a five-shot lead in Tucson
Believe it or not, the spring college golf season kicked off on Monday with the start of the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz. After a 36-hole day at Sewailo Golf Club (a par 71), the top-ranked team in the field from the fall season is the one that rose to the top.
Arizona State, No. 15 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, rode afternoon rounds of 64 and 65 from Chun An Yu and Cameron Sisk, respectively, to a 21-under team total and the top of the leaderboard. Every player on the Sun Devil roster posted a round of par or better in the afternoon, and all four counting scores were in the red. In fact, Sisk’s morning 72 was the only Arizona State score over par for the entire day.
Arizona State’s second-round 17-under 267 was the real difference maker on the day considering it was at least five shots lower than any other team’s afternoon score.
Yu, of course, won the Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne in Australia earlier this month. He was T-16 at the Asia-Pacific Amateur last fall.
Arizona and UCLA put together 16-under 552 team totals to fall into a tie for second five shots behind Arizona State. UCLA, together with St. Mary’s (Calif.), had held the morning lead at 5 under.
By the end of the day, St. Mary’s had slipped to fifth, seven shots off Arizona State’s pace.
Only Texas A&M’s Chandler Phillips, who spent part of his winter break at a practice session for prospective U.S. Walker Cup team members, was able to outscore Yu. Phillips followed a morning 67 with an afternoon 63 and leads the individual race by three at 12 under.
