California (CGA/CIF) Boys State High School Championships
PEBBLE BEACH, CA (June 8, 2005) -- Winning the California Interscholastic Federation's individual championship marked the perfect ending to Daniel Lim's Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose) high school career. The 18-year-old will matriculate to Stanford in the fall on a golf scholarship, but at Poppy Hills Golf Course Wednesday, his 3-under 69 powered him to a one-stroke win over four other competitors.
St. Augustine of San Diego, which won the team title by nine shots, was led by one of four individual runners-up, Taylor Coffman, who shot a two-under 70. Murietta Valley was the team runner up, nine shots back. In a tie for third was Northern California's top team, San Mateo's Junipero Serra High
"I'm excited to win,” Coach Ranney of St. Augustine said. "We had a good drive up (from San Diego) but we will have a great drive home."
Lim was equally happy. "It was real easy today," the 2005 San Francisco City runner-up said regarding his round that consisted of four birdies and one bogey. "Once I got to four under, I thought I could shoot 65 or 66. I knew I had to go low for the team." Lim plays out of Saratoga CC and has won two AJGA championships among many other individual titles.
The 2005 championship represents the second year in a row for an event that saw championships conducted from 1976-1980 (the PGA Tour's John Cook was the inaugural individual champion) and then suffer a 24-year hibernation. The 2004 revival was won by Torrey Pines High School of La Jolla. The tournament invites the top three teams and top six individuals from the both the North and South championships and rotates host sites between both parts of the state. The 48-man field competes for low individual and team
The team championship was captured by San Diego's St. Augustine High School with a score of 375. The tournament was won on the strength of consistent play throughout the six-man team (the format counts top five scores to form a team total). The championship was also the first in any sport for the school. "They are all solid players," veteran head coach Greg Ranney said. "On a course of this caliber that plays this tough, you don't expect to score quite as well. But low scoring is a shared responsibility on this team."
