NCGA rolls to lopsided Staedler-Jetter Cup victory

The NCGA took back the cup for the first time since 2011
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2018) – The NCGA rolled to a 20.5-7.5 victory after winning singles matches, 7.5-6.5. The winning points from the NCGA came from Staedler-Jetter rookie James Camaione.
The NCGA put the first point of the day on the board when Jim Knoll defeated the NCPGA’s Mike Cook, 2 and 1. Laird Small won the next match for the NCPGA. A half followed but when Camaione won his match again Dave DeLong on the 16th green, the matches were sealed in the NCGA’s favor.
The NCGA’s win snapped a six-year NCPGA winning streak. The NCGA now leads in the overall Staedler-Jetter Cup series, 15-10-3.
“This was a great victory after a six-year drought,” said NCGA captain Gail Rogers. “It was a decisive win.”

DAY ONE
The NCGA is putting itself in great shape to get the monkey off its back at the Staedler-Jetter Cup matches. In Thursday morning’s Chapman matches, the NCGA took a commanding 6-1 lead. They extended that to 13-1 by the end of the day.
The NCGA has not won this event, which pits Northern California PGA pros (ages 55 and over) against the top senior amateurs in the region, since 2011.
The NCGA leads after at lunch thanks to morning victories by the tandems of Mark Morgan and Tony Padilla, Randy Haag and Scott Anderon and Jim Knoll and James Camaione. Those three pairs swept the first three matches on the board, then two more NCGA sides came behind them to add to the cushion. The NCGA ended the morning matches with a pair of 6-and-5 blowout victories from Gary Vanier and Frank Pieper and Jeff Britton and Casey Boyns.
The NCPGA’s sole morning point came from a pair of halves: Jon Grund and Don Thames and Bing Bingham and Glen Stubblefield.
To make matters more bleak for the NCPGA, the NCGA swept all of seven afternoon four-ball matches. Only two of the seven matches saw the 18th hole.
The NCGA leads in the overall Staedler-Jetter Cup series, 14-10-3, but the NCPGA has won the last six cups.
