LSU won its home tournament for the fifth time and placed five golfers at the top of the leaderboard.

BATON ROUGE, La. (Oct. 7, 2018) – Five was the magic number for LSU on Sunday as it left the field in the dust at its home event to log its first victory of the fall season. It’s the fifth consecutive year the Tigers have won the David Toms Intercollegiate at the University Club. The top five spots on the individual leaderboard were filled by LSU players.

LSU had a record 21-under 843 made up of consistent rounds of 282-281-280. Louisiana finished in second at 7 over. Mercer and the LSU “B” team tied for third at 14 over.

“I’m very proud of all 10 of our guys who played this weekend,” head coach Chuck Winstead said. “Certainly, we have room to grow. We’ve got a lot of good players and I’m proud of how they performed this weekend."

Trey Winstead (-7), Chris Woollam (-6), Garrett Barber (-5), Michael Sanders (-4) and Philip Barbaree (-3) took the top five spots on the individual leaderboard to make it a true LSU sweep.

Winstead, the coach’s son, finished 54 holes at 7-under 209 to claim medalist honors for the first time in his career. The sophomore and Baton Rouge native rattled off rounds of 68-70-71. He rolled in 17 birdies during the 54-hole tournament to lead the field.

“It’s incredible,” the younger Winstead said. “It’s really cool. It was great to have my family and friends here supporting me – it kind of kept me at ease."

Woolam, the runner-up, actually played on LSU’s “B” team for the weekend. It was also his LSU debut. A native of South Africa, Woollam carded rounds of 68-72-70 on his way to finishing at 6-under par 210.

LSU’s team title follows a T-7 finish at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, the season opener, and a third-place finish at the Maui Jim Invitational.
