Vanderbilt junior Abbey Carlson led her team to a home victory at the rain-shortened Mason Rudolph

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (Sept. 23, 2018) – Rain plagued the Mason Rudolph Championship, one of the premier early-season events on the women’s college golf schedule, but the home team was able to claim a victory in what was a shortened weekend. Vanderbilt won their home tournament at the Vanderbilt Legends Club for the first time since 2014 and just the third time overall.

Junior Abbey Carlson paced the Commodores and won her first individual title on the strength of back-to-back rounds of 6-under 66. She won the medalist honors by five shots over a pair of Wake Forest players, Emilia Migliaccio and Siyun Liu.

The Commodores opened with 10-under 278, then added 7-under 281 in the second round. A third and final round was supposed to take place on Sunday, but the course received too much rain for teams to go back out. At 17 under par, Vanderbilt finished 12 shots ahead of runner-up Arizona State.

"I'm just so dang proud of our girls and what they did this weekend," said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. "It's not always that easy to win your home event and they handled everything exceptionally well. I'm really happy for Abbey. She's worked really hard since stepping on campus her freshman year, academically and at the golf course. It's nice to see that pay off for her."

Vanderbilt’s victory comes on the heels or a runner-up finish at the Cougar Classic two weeks ago. It was another 36-hole event after an approaching Hurricane Florence caused officials to cancel the final round.

As for Arizona State, the Sun Devils were just one shot off Vanderbilt’s lead in the first round, but lost pace in Round 2 with a 4-over 292.

Wake Forest was third while Clemson and Auburn tied for fourth.
