Ken Kinkopf and Michael Kelley come from three shots back to win by a single shot at Jefferson Country Club
BLACKLICK, Ohio (September 19, 2018) - Ken Kinkopf (Dublin, Ohio) and Michael Kelley (Westerville, Ohio) shot an 8-under 64 to win the Ohio Two Man Best Ball at Jefferson Country Club.
Kinkopf and Kelley opened with a 67 on Tuesday putting them three shots behind the lead that was held by four teams. Andrew Montooth/Bill Williamson, Kyle & Mark Monfort, Steve Wilke/Terry Wamack, and Jason Leeds/Mike McGuire all shot 8-under 64s in round one.
Playing ahead of the lead groups, Kinkopf and Kelley got into contention with a front nine of 5-under 31 that included three straight birdies starting at the fifth hole.
As the other round one co-leaders faded, Montooth and Williamson took the lead, going out in 33 and adding another birdie at the tenth hole to get to 12 under for the tournament. But their momentum would stall out from there, and they finished at the same 12 under mark.
Kyle & Mark Monfort birdied the 14th to get to four under for the day and 12 under for the tournament, but they too could get no further, with a late bogey on the 17th ending their chances.
Kinkopf and Kelley pulled ahead with four more birdies to get to 9 under for the day through 16 holes, and 14 under for the tournament. A bogey at the 17th brought them back to 13 under, but when the two chasing teams failed to birdie the par-5 finishing hole, the trophy was theirs.
For Kinkopf, it was his third Ohio Two Man title, going along with the two he won with his son Michael in 2009 and 2011.
In the Senior Division, Jeffrey Knox and Monty Guest won by two shots over Craig Soule and Jeff Sparks, with a winning total of 5-under 139.
In the Super Senior Division, David Downey and Tim Miller shot a 4-under 140 to win by four shots over Miles Cumberland and Pat Sheffer.
