BELLEVUE, Neb. (Sept. 19, 2018) - Matt Haynes captured the eighth Nebraska Senior Match Play Championship at Platteview Golf Club, his home club, on Wednesday with a hard-fought match against Murray Krambeer. In the end, Haynes prevailed by a 3-and-2 margin to win his first title in the event.
Krambeer took a quick 2-up lead after a birdie at the first hole and a par to Haynes’ bogey at No. 2. There were too many bogeys on Krambeer’s card after that, however. He lost his advantage when Haynes birdied No. 7. Haynes led from No. 11 on, thanks in large part to birdies at Nos. 11, 13 and 16, the last of which closed out the match.
“The course really looked good, it is perfect right now,” Haynes said of his home course.
Haynes called this his first real victory in golf and acknowledged how difficult it is to break through in this sport.
“It’s awesome, it’s one of the things that I said earlier, I was fighting demons because golf is the hardest sport that I’ve ever played to actually win in competition,” Haynes said. “You have to control your nerves, your breathing, your brain and I was able to do that over a three-day period and that’s really the first time I’ve ever done that so that’s really very gratifying.”
In the President's Flight final, Omaha's Mike Root defeated Omaha's Don Shiffermiller, 3 and 2. In the Net Division, Omaha's Sam Kumar won the Sam Reynolds Flight, while Lincoln's Bert Newell took the Bob Astleford Flight.
