Arevalo runs away with California State Fair Women's title

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2018) – Last season at San Jose State, Abegail Arevalo broke through for her first collegiate victory. On Sunday, Arevalo added another line on her resume with a major amateur title. The Spartan junior from the Philippines topped the California State Fair Championship by a stunning seven shots at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course.

Arevalo opened with 1-under 70 in the first round of the championship, and entered the final round trailing Marni Murez, a junior at Santa Clara, by one shot. But Arevalo’s score dove in the final round. She came back with 65 to finish the event with a 7-under 135 total, seven shots better than runners-up Murez and Franziska Fredrich.

A year ago, Arevalo fell one shot short of champion Vanessa Ha. Arevalo went on to lead her San Jose State team in scoring as a sophomore, and ended the season with an individual berth in the NCAA San Francisco Regional. She was San Jose was a first-team All-Mountain West selection. Her first collegiate victory came in March, when she won the MountainView Collegiate with a 3-under 213.

Ariell Swan was solo fourth with a 143 total, and Alexa Clark, who was tied with Arevalo after the first round, tied for fifth overall with Nao Bando. They were at 144.

Krista Wylder won the handicap flight by five shots over Mieko Rogers and Cynthia Stefani was the senior flight champion.

ABOUT THE California State Fair Women's

The 2020 State Fair Women's Championship will be contested at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course, Sacramento, CA on September 5 and 6, 2020.

The tournament is open to all women amateur golfers age 18 or older by September 5, 2020, with an established USGA Handicap Index of 36.4 or less, members of a college golf team, junior girls ages 14-18 who placed in the top three in the 2020 SGC City or County Women’s Tournaments scratch flight, or the top three junior girls in the 15-18 Division of the 2019 State Fair Junior Championship or the top three junior girls in any of the 2020 SGC Junior Championships Age 14-18 Division, or special invitation.

August 26, 2020 is the deadline - no refunds after this date.

Handicaps will be based on August 15, 2020 indexes and played to the lower GHIN Handicap Index or Tournament (T) Index (Modified USGA Rules).

The Championship Flight contestants must have an index of 6.6 or less and will play at scratch from the back (blue) tees. Senior Net Handicap Flight(s), age 60+, determined by handicap or age (entries permitting) and Net Handicap Flight(s) will play using handicaps from the forward (black tees). Ties for overall low gross, overall low net and overall senior low net will be decided in a hole-by-hole playoff. All other ties will be decided based on the USGA recommended method of matching score cards.

Entry fees are $130 per person for non-City "Play Card" holders; $125 for City Adult "Play Card" holders; $120 for Seniors with a City Senior "Play Card". The entry fee includes two (2) days green fees and awards (power cart not included).
