The 77-year-old teams with Tim Carlton to come from behind and win by three shots at Crown Colony

LUFKIN, TX (April 21, 2018) - Winning never gets old, and neither does Mike Rice. The 77-year-old former U.S. Senior Amateur champion from Houston won his latest tournament at Crown Colony Country Club, teaming with Tim Carlton to take the Senior Temple Cup by three shots. The win was Rice's sixth in this event, and the first in nine years. He teamed with Bob Hullender to win in 1997 and 1999, and won three more times with Steve Earsley in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Rice and Carlton entered the day two shots behind the leaders John Dowdall and Jon Shipley, who shot the round of the tournament on Friday (a 7-under 65) but couldn't sustain the momentum and had to settle for a join runner-up position at 9-under 207 for the tournament. Dowdall was going for three straight Senior Temple Cup wins. He and Shipley won the championship in 2016, and Dowdall repeated with partner John Kennedy last year. The closest pursuers, Stephen Love and Mike Peck, were one shot back after two rounds but also couldn't make a move and ended up sharing second with Dowdall and Shipley. Rice and Carlton's final round of 68 was the lowest of the day, and gave them the win at 12-under-par 204. They were the only team to break 70 all three rounds, shooting 67-69-68. David Ortego and Scott Smith finished fourth at 6-under 210, while 2014 and 2015 champions Kip Estep and Bobby Baker were fifth at 4 under. In the Super Senior flight, Sam Boyd and Bob Hullardson shot a final-round 69 to win by two shots over Henry Cole and Wayne Peddy. Boyd and Hullardson finished the tournament at even par 216.
