Leading Arizona State to the title was medalist winner Chun An Yu
BANDON, OR (March 13, 2018) - Arizona State matched their first round 11-under tally on Tuesday to finish 28-under and as the runaway winners of the Bandon Dunes Collegiate. Ranked No. 21 in the country the Sun Devils earned a 13-stroke victory over 15th-ranked Clemson (-15) to pick up their second win of the season.
Washington State (-11) was third, Utah (-8) was fourth while Santa Clara (-7) placed fifth.
Leading Arizona State to the title was medalist winner Chun An Yu. The victory was the sophomore's second career individual title but it didn't come easy as he managed to just squeeze out a one-stroke victory after finishing 13-under.
Combining rounds of 65-68-67 An Yu played a strong final round with four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys. The final round didn't begin as the Taiwan native had hoped with a bogey on the 2nd but he was able to rebound with birdies on the 4th, 6th, 7th, 15th holes while also mixing in an eagle on the par-5 12th.
After playing Nos. 4-15 of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in 6-under An Yu had created himself some breathing room that proved to be needed after he bogeyed the 17th.
After beginning his freshman season in January of last year An Yu played in nine spring events winning the National Invitational Tournament and sharing second at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. An Yu also made a run to the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals after surviving a 13-for-8 playoff just to get into match play.
Two other members of the Arizona State lineup finished inside the top-15; Alex Del Rey Gonzalez (T9; -4) and Koichiro Ishika (T13; -2) while the other two members of the lineup; Mason Andersen (T26; +2) Blake Wagoner (T41; +5) both contributed to the win.
In fact Andersen had the second best final two round combined score on the team going 68-68 to close in 6-under.
Rounding out the individual standings were Derek Bayley (Washington State) at 12-under in second, Turk Pettit (Clemson) was third at 11-under, Kyler Dunkle (Utah) took fourth at 9-under while Chris Korte (Denver) and Matthew McCarty (Santa Clara) shared fifth at 7-under.
Starting on the 3rd hole Bayley closed strong with consecutive birdies only to run out of time. Pettit started on the 3rd hole as well closed with two straight birdies but like Bayley he ran out of time as he started his charge to late.
