The team win was the second straight for Northwestern after a slow start to the fall season
GREENSBORO, NC (October 29, 2017) - Led by medalist Dylan Wu Northwestern captured the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate hosted by Grandover Resort East Course.
With temperatures in the 50's, rain falling and the wind blowing the Wildcats were the only team under-par during the final round as they finished 9-over and as the winner by two over No. 21 North Carolina (+11).
Northwestern, 2-under and the only team in red figures on Sunday, picked up their second consecutive win after sharing the Windon Memorial Classic title earlier in the month. Although the fall season is short, four events in about six weeks, the Wildcats have shown great improvement. They started the season with a 13th place showing to begin the year and then followed it up with a 10th place showing before winning their last two events to close out the first half of the season.
Medalist winner Dylan Wu, a winner three-times in his career, combined rounds of 69-70-70 to finish 7-under and as the four-stroke winner. The senior started his final round slowly with bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2 only to find his form late on the opening side with three consecutive birdies from Nos. 7-9. A third bogey did follow on the 11th but birdies on the 12th and 14th holes ensured Wu's spot atop the medalist leaderboard.
Helping Wu and Northwestern to the title were a pair of other top-20 performers; Ryan Lumsden (T3; -1) and Sam Triplett (T17; +7).
Duke took third at 15-over, NC State was fourth at 26-over and in fifth it was host UNCG with a 31-over tallying.
The top-five of the medalist standings was completed by Ben Griffin (North Carolina) in second at 3-under, Stephen Franken (NC State) and Lumsden shared third at 1-under while Duke's Alex Smalley was fifth at even-par.
