North Carolina sets team and individual records on way to title at UNC Finley Golf Course
CHAPEL HILL, NC (October 8, 2017) - Not only did host North Carolina win the Tar Heel Intercollegiate but they won in record setting fashion.. Paced by Ben Griffin's school-record 19-under performance the Tar Heels finished 49-under and 23 shots clear of runner-up Jacksonville at UNC Finley Golf Course.
The win for North Carolina was their first of the year and it broke the previous program scoring record by 16 shots.
Ben Griffin set the tone for his record-setting weekend with a first round 5-under 67 before following it up with a 9-under 63 in the second round of Saturday's 36-hole first day. Sitting at 14-under following two rounds Griffin kept the peddle to the mettle closing with a second 5-under 67. Griffin was so good this weekend that he set the UNC record for fewest strokes in a 54-hole tournament and lowest score to par. For Griffin the win was the third of his career.
During the the three rounds Griffin birdied 19 times, eagled once and bogeyed just twice. Leading by two at the start of the final round Griffin began his final round with three consecutive birdies to immediately set the tone for his final round.
Behind Griffin for North Carolina came Jose Montano (2nd; -14), Preyer Fountain (T8; -8), William Register (T12; -6) and Austin Hitt (T20; -4).
The individual top-five was rounded out by Luis Ruiz (Coast Carolina) and Bryce Hendrix (UNCG) in third at 12-under while Raul Pereda (Jacksonville) was fifth at 11-under.
On the team leaderboard it Jacksonville (-26) in second, UNCW (-21) took third, Maryland (-20) placed fourth and in fifth it was Coastal Carolina (-17).
