The amateur from Shelby, NC shot a five-under 67 to top a crowded leaderboard by one shot at Bryan Park

GREENSBORO, NC (August 1, 2017) - Amateur Elliott Grayson of Shelby, NC holds the first round lead at the 93rd Carolinas Open being conducted at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center in Greensboro, NC. Grayson, a member of the University of Akron Golf Team, opened with an impressive 33-34=67 (-5) on the 7,168-yard Champions Course designed by Rees Jones. He recorded seven birdies and mixed in two bogeys. Sitting just behind in second place with a 33-35=68 (-4) is Brian Joyce, the PGA Head Professional at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC. There is an eight-way tie for third place at 69 (-3) that includes defending champion, PGA Apprentice Assistant Professional Drew Younts of Alamance CC in Burlington, NC. A number of other amateurs are in the hunt after round one, including Thomas Lilly (Newton, NC), Keegan Hoff (Charlotte, NC), and Grant Powell (Colfax, NC) who are all in the eight-way tie for third at three under. Five other amateurs are under par after the first round. 150 of the top playing PGA Professionals and amateurs in North and South Carolina are competing at the oldest professional golf tournament in the Carolinas. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties.
