Saddleback College takes team title, College of the Desert's Mike Bench wins individual honors

MERCED, Calif. (May 14, 2007)-- Saddleback College of Mission Viejo captured the California State Community College Championship for the sixth time and Dustin Andres of the College of the Desert rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to defeat Saddleback's Mike Bench for individual honors at Merced Golf & Country Club.

Bench's 2-under-par 140 for 36 holes and David Lyons' 1-under-par 141 paced Saddleback's commanding 11-stroke win at the 6,519-yard, par-72 Merced course. The win was Saddleback's first since it won titles in 1994 and 1996.

Andres led College of the Desert (of Palm Desert) to second in the team competition, while Fresno City College took third, 12 strokes out of second place.

The top six individual finishers (Andres, Bench, Lyons, Les Teuteberg of Cabrillo, Robbie Berton of Saddleback, Bryce Holloway of Bakersfield and Chris Arnold of Fresno City) plus ties qualified for all-state honors and were awarded medals.
