Many-flighted benefit event deemed success

GLEN ALLEN, Va. (April 23, 2007)-- GLEN ALLEN –– The VSGA Women’s Division began its 2007 event schedule with its Two-Person Captain’s Choice Tournament at Hunting Hawk Golf Club (5,164 yards, par 37-35—72) on Monday, April 23. The annual event benefited the Virginia Golf Foundation and the Spencer-Wilkinson Scholarship Fund. Featuring an 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. shotgun start with overall gross and net winners, 67 teams and 134 players participated in the event, which was flighted by handicap. Overall gross winners in the morning were Sherry Bowman (Manassas) and Helen Ferneyhough (Monroe), who fired 6-under-par 66. Bowman-Ferneyhough outlasted the team of Dot Bolling (Salem) and Peggy Woodard (Virginia Beach), who shot 5-under 67 and took home first low gross in division one. Ridgeway’s Fran Hensley and Salem’s Cathi Carter garnered second low gross, carding 4-under 68. Meanwhile, Northern Virginians Marie Watrous (Lorton) and Carol Mills (Springfield) fired 3-over-par 75 and won first low gross in division two in the morning session. Virginia Beach residents Mary McNeal and Carolyn Day were second low gross division two morning action (77, +5). Afternoon action saw Maggie Balch of Maidens and Teki Hall (Manakin-Sabot) post 5-under-par 67 to capture low gross honors. Chesapeake’s Cyndi Carlson and Portsmouth’s Cindy Morris also had 5-under 67 and went on to take home first low gross in division one, with Balch and Hall prevailing on a match of scorecards. Richmond residents Boodie McGurn and Nancy Williams shot 4-under 68 to take home second low gross in p.m. division one. Meanwhile, Pat Stauffer (Richmond) and Susan Grinnan (Quinton) were the top finishers in division two low gross (69, -3) in afternoon competition, while Fairfax residents Nancy Crouch and Cathy Reusche were second in division two (71, -1). In addition to the aforementioned finishers, Richmonders Peggy Crowley and Carmen Warfield earned overall low net accolades in the morning, turning in a net score of 7-under-par 65. Central Virginians Patti Peterson and Leslie Orlando recorded a net score of 10-under-par 62 to win overall low net in the afternoon.
