Virginia retained the Ye Olde Feudin Stick and defeated West Virginia for the eighth straight year

DANIELS, WV (April 23, 2017) - The Virginia State Golf Association team won six of the seven four-ball matches on Saturday, helping Virginia break away for a 19-9 win in the 34th Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W. Va. Virginia retained the Ye Olde Feudin Stick and defeated West Virginia for the eighth straight year. The West Virginia Golf Association squad got off to a strong start in Saturday morning foursome play, taking full points in the senior and super senior matches for a 3-0 lead. Virginia won all four regular matches, though, and led 4-3 after morning play. On Saturday afternoon, the VSGA team increased its lead to 10-4 thanks to six victories in four-ball play. Needing just 4½ points in Sunday singles to clinch the victory, Virginia earned nine points and won comfortably. Four VSGA players were a perfect 3-0 over the weekend: Jeff Long (Evergreen CC), Kyle Bailey (Roanoke CC), Justin Young (Ballyhack GC) and Buck Brittain (The Virginian GC). In addition, Scott Shingler (Dominion Valley CC) and Vincent Nadeau (Spring Creek GC) went 2-0-1. Brittain and Bailey recorded the most dominant victories in singles play. Brittain defeated Michael Stewart and Bailey topped Mitch Rouse, both by 6-and-4 counts. Virginia did not lose a four-ball or foursome match. Shingler and Young; Bailey and Nadeau; Keith Decker (Chatmoss CC) and Long; and Brittain and Matt Chandler (Hunting Hills CC) each went 2-0 on Saturday. Senior Steve Fox was the lone West Virginian to record a perfect weekend.
