STELLENBOSCH, South Africa (April 21, 2017) - With a closing 2-under 70 Clayton Mansfield has won the Boland Amateur Open hosted by Stellenbosch Golf Club. Spurred on by 9-under 63 in the first round, Mansfield finished the tournament 14-under-par and five shots clear of runner-up Emilio Pera. Mansfield set the tone for his round with a birdie on the 2nd hole, it was the first of his four on the day against just two bogeys. The additional birdies fell on Nos. 8, 15 and 17. Pera completed the week 9-under, Matt Saulez was third at 8-under while Theunie Bezuidenhout and Therion Nel shared fourth at 7-under. ROUND TWO RECAP After setting a torrid pace on Tuesday at the Boland Amateur Open Clayton Mansfield followed up his first round 9-under 63 with a day two 3-under 69 to reach 12-under. With one day remaining Mansfield will carry a two-stroke lead into the final round at Stellenbosch Golf Club. During the second round Mansfield was even for the day through 13 holes before rolling in birdies on Nos. 14, 15 and 17 to finish with a flourish. Overall Mansfield birdied five-times and bogeyed three-times during the round. Christian Basson will began the final round in second place at 10-under after a 4-under 68 and he would have been tied for the 36-hole lead had it not been for a closing double-bogey. The highlight of the day for Basson came on No. 8 when eagled the par-5. Gerlou Roux, who recorded a hole-in-one on the 13th and Emilio Pera are tied for third at 7-under while Matt Saulez is fifth at 5-under. ROUND ONE RECAP Clayton Mansfield was at his best on Wednesday during the first round of the Boland Amateur Open at Stellenbosch Golf Club. The native of South Africa set the day one pace with a flawless 9-under 63 and he will carry a three shot lead into Thursday's middle round. Starting on No. 1, Mansfield kick started his round with a birdie on the opening hole and overall five of his first seven holes resulted in birdies. The start for Mansfield got even better on the next hole as he carded an eagle on the par-5 8th for a 7-under start in the first eight holes. On the back nine Mansfield added additional birdies on the 12th and 14th holes. Christian Basson carded a bogey-free 6-under 66 and he is in second place. After beginning on No. 10 the birdies for Basson fell on the 11th, 12th, 14th, 5th, 6th and 8th holes. Emilio Pera, Greg Sheard and Phillip Swanepoel are tied for third at 5-under while Francois le Roux sits in sixth at 4-under. An additional 11 players are currently one shot further back at 3-under in a tie for seventh.
