When Garrick Higgo began the 36-hole final day he was six strokes off the pace set by Alex Gleeson and a bit of an after thought
GARDEN ROUTE, South Africa (February 16, 2017) -- When Cape Province Amateur Open winner Garrick Higgo of South Africa began the 36-hole final day at Kingswood Golf Estate he was six strokes off the pace set by Alex Gleeson and a bit of an after thought. However, Higgo made it his business to make sure that he was the only thought by days end.
On Thursday morning Higgo began his rally with a third round 3-under 69 which firmly put him into the final round picture. It was an interesting scorecard featuring first, second, 15th and 18th hole bogeys while during the middle portion of the round from Nos. 3-14 Higgo poured in seven birdies.
Higgo, a UNLV commit, continued his rally in the fourth round with an 4-under 68 but still his work wasn't done. By finishing regulation at 10-under Higgo found himself tied with last weeks South African Stroke Play winner Robin Dawson of Ireland and fellow countrymen Brandon Cloete before outlasting them in extra holes.
The top-five was rounded out by the group of Stuart Grehan (Ireland), Loris Schuepbach (Switzerland) and 36-hole leader Alex Gleeson (Ireland) at 9-under and sharing fourth.
Gleeson was tied for the lead until he bogeyed on the 71st hole.
