GARDEN ROUTE, South Africa (February 15, 2017) -- With a 6-under 66 second round Alex Gleeson has moved 9-under and into the Cape Province Amateur lead. Gleeson surged up the leaderboard after beginning the round five-strokes off the pace.

The Cape Province Amateur is being played on two separate courses and on Wednesday Gleeson made his way around the George Golf Club. Following an opening hole par Gleeson carded his first birdie of the day on the second and set the tone for an eight birdie, two bogey round.

Gleeson played his best golf in the middle of his round with four consecutive birdies on Nos. 6-9 and seven birdies in a nine hole stretch when you count out to the 14th hole.

In 2016 Gleeson earned points in seven AmateurGolf.com Ranking events and he is coming off a top-15 showing at the South African Stroke Play.

Three players are two-strokes behind Gleeson in a tie for second place at 7-under. That group is comprised of Kevin Le Blanc (Ireland), Richard Joubert (South Africa) and Brandon Cloete (South Ireland).

Last weeks South African Stroke Play winner Robin Dawson of Ireland is 6-under and in fifth place heading into the 36-hole final day.
