First day leaders hold on for victories
BRENTWOOD, Calif. (March 11, 2007)-- The second day of the amateurgolf.com Diablo Valley Amateur saw some higher stroke totals, but in the end, the first-day leaders were able to hold off their competitors to take home the wins.
Piedmont resident Freddy Wolfe was in the most precarious spot to start the day, leading by a stroke after shooting a 69 on Saturday.
Wolfe, who plays for Cal Berkley, saw his lead disappear midway through the day when Jason Stone aced the 240-yard 11th hole, then grabbed another birdie to take a one-stroke lead through 13.
Wolfe soon reversed his fortunes.
“He had me by one through 13, then I birdied 15 and he bogeyed it, that swung it back to me,” he said. “Then we both pared 17-18.”
Wolfe made a few tough four-footers at the last two holes to wrap up the round with a 73 for a total of 142. He was less lucky the previous day, his first time playing Brentwood Country Club, when he dropped three strokes on the final two.
In the senior division, Bob Olds took a conservative track to victory, shooting even par 72 and letting his opening day lead of four strokes carry him to victory. He shot his age, 67, on Saturday, and never led by less than four shots throughout the day.
“I hit the ball very solidly yesterday, and I obviously putted well, I think I hit 13 or 14 greens,” said Olds. “I just focused on going par, par, par and hope for some birdies; I ended up with three birdies and three bogeys.”
Olds, a local resident, said his familiarity with the course paid dividends.
“I live in Somerset, and I’ve had an annual pass to the course for the past 13 years, this year was the first time I haven’t renewed it,” said Olds. “You could say I have a little edge, with the local knowledge of knowing the greens, but you still have to make the shots.”
In the net flight, Vincent Steele comfortably won his first amateurgolf.com tournament by shooting a 66-72-138, pacing his nearest challenger by four strokes.
