Galven Green follows in his brother's Gavin's footsteps by winning the Malaysia Amateur for the third straight time

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (December 5, 2016) -- What is it with the Green brothers and hat-tricks? Teenager Galven Kendall has clinched his third straight Malaysian Amateur Closed title to equal his brother Gavin Kyle’s feat from 2009-2011. The 17-year-old Galven, though, saved his best for last at the Royal Perak Golf Club in Ipoh yesterday – fighting back from five shots behind to pip Muhd Afif Razif, the leader of the first two rounds, by one shot. Galven carded a four-under 68 for a three-day total of five-under 211. “Coming into this week’s event, I knew I had the chance to follow in Gav’s footsteps of becoming a three-time winner of the championships. I’m just glad I did it,” said Galven. Galven felt that the turning point came when he made three consecutive birdies – from the eighth hole – to move into a tie for the lead. And as he upped his game, Afif’s game began to unravel. Galven then added back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th to pull away from the field. He dropped his only shot of the day on the 17th to return to the clubhouse with a one-shot lead. “It was very nerve-wracking towards the last couple of holes ... the scores were really close,” said Galven. “I didn’t stay back to see the last flight (where Afif played) ... I was at the clubhouse waiting anxiously, then a few guys came and told me I won!” Afif, seeking his second title since 2011, could only follow up his pair of opening 69s with a 74 for 212 total. This could well be Galven’s last Malaysian Amateur Closed as he’s set to move to the United States in the middle of next year. He will be studying and playing collegiate golf at the University of New Mexico – the same place where Gavin studied and enjoyed an illustrious amateur career. In the women’s division, Warda Amira Abdul Rawof won her first national closed crown after closing with a 70 for a one-shot triumph over three-time winner Nur Durriyah Damian. -story written by The Star Online
