Garrick Higgo closed with a 5-under 67 on Sunday at the Central Gauteng Amateur Open

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (November 20, 2016) -- Late heroics were the order of the day for Garrick Higgo at the Central Gauteng Amateur Open. First Higgo birded the 17th hole at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club to reach 9-under and then needing some more magic he eagled the closing hole to lift himself to 11-under and a one-stroke victory. Higgo signed for a final round 5-under 67 the included just one bogey and three other birdies which came on the 5th, 11th and 14th holes. Combrinck Smit was the runner-up with a 10-under total. Smit flew out of the gates with a 4-under 33 front nine but an even-par homeward nine wasn't enough. A birdie on No. 18 was to little to late. Therion Nel was third at 8-under while Malcolm Mitchell and Marco Steyn shared fourth at 7-under. Suspended second round leader ended up 5-under in a tie for seventh. ROUND TWO RECAP With second round play suspended David McIntyre has reached 9-under and the top of the Central Gauteng Amateur Open leaderboard at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club. McIntyre fired a 6-under 66 in the second round that was capped by a final hole eagle three. Prior to the highlight finish McIntyre carded five birdies and a bogey. The eagle concluded a 5-under sprint to the finish over the course of the final five holes. Four players are currently 6-under and sharing second place. Included in the group are Garrick Higgo, Marco Steyn, Danie van Niekerk and Combrinck Smit. First round leader Ryan Lane is currently tied for sixth at 5-under with four holes in his second round remaining. Play will resume at 7:00 a.m. local time with the final round to follow. The event has been reduced to 54-holes. ROUND ONE RECAP Ryan Lane began his Central Gauteng Amateur Open with a bogey-free 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club. Lane carded birdies on four of his first six holes and then three more throughout the course of his final five holes. In between Lane parred seven consecutive holes. Danie van Niekerk and Combrinck Smit are tied for second at 6-under following 66's. van Niekerk and Smit both reached 6-under with five birdie, one bogey and one eagle rounds. For van Niekerk his eagle came on the 17th while Smit eagled the 6th. Garrick Higgo, Marco Steyn and Estiaan Conradie are 4-under and tied for fourth.
