Broc Haymon captures the Greater Houston City Amateur
HOUSTON, TX (October 2, 2016) -- Thanks to three consecutive rounds under-par Broc Haymon finished 9-under to claim the Greater Houston City Amateur Championship. Haymon finished three-strokes clear of 2014 winner and 36-hole leader John Hunter at Memorial Park Golf Course.

"There's some good players in Houston," Haymon told the Houston Chronicle. "And to win this and hold up the trophy after four rounds, you know that's special."

Haymon started the 36-hole final day tied with John Hunter before pulling away with rounds of 68-70 Sunday. In the first round of the day Haymon birdied four holes and bogeyed one. The birdies came on Nos. 1, 7, 10 and 13.

The final round of the 72-hole tournament was a bit shaky at the start for Haymon before he was able to settle down on the closing nine. Haymon turned in 2-over 37 and was one shot behind Hunter at the turn but responded with a four birdie and one bogey back nine.

Despite holding a one-stroke lead with nine holes to remain 2014 winner John Hunter was second at 6-under after not being able to get much going on Sunday with rounds of 70-71.

"I knew early on it was going to be tough to beat him because he just made everything he looked at," Hunter said.

Grant Schroeder finished third at 4-under while Kyle Maxwell and first round leader, Texas A&M commit Walker Lee were fifth at even-par.

ROUND TWO RECAP

2014 champion winner John Hunter and Broc Haymon are tied atop the midway point Greater Houston City Amateur leaderboard at Memorial Park Golf Course. The duo is knotted at 5-under with the 36-hole final day still to come on Sunday.

Hunter moved to the top of the leaderboard with a 4-under 67 on Saturday that included five birdies and only a closing hole bogey. Hunter twice birdied consecutive holes during his round while also rolling in a bird on his opening hole.

For co-leader Broc Haymon it was a tournament best 6-under 65 that moved him squarely into the mix. Haymon started his round with three straight birdies to get into the red. A bogey on No. 4 briefly halted his momentum but a birdie on the 5th got it going again as Haymon returned to 2-under for the week.

Still at that number Haymon rattled off four birdies in his seven back nine holes before dropping his final shot on No. 17.

First round leader Walker Lee kept pace with the leaders and is one shot off the lead at 4-under after a second round 1-under 70. Lee, a 2017 Texas A&M commit, birdied three holes and bogeyed two during the round.

Grant Schroeder is fourth at 3-under while Bart Worthing, Devaughn Robinson and Ransom Jacobson are all tied for fifth at 2-under.

ROUND ONE RECAP

2017 Texas A&M commit Walker Lee opened with a 3-under 68 to take the first round Greater Houston City Amateur lead. Lee holds a one-stroke lead with three rounds remaining at Memorial Park Golf Course.

Lee birdied two of his first three holes to quickly move to 2-under. From there it was a seesaw round that included an additional three birdies and three bogeys. On the day Lee birdied a total of five holes.

Kyle Isgar and Devaughn Robinson are just one behind following rounds of 2-under 69. Isgar birdied four holes throughout his round while Robinson tallied five.

C.W. Mallon, Grant Schroeder and John Hunter are the final three players under-par and tied for fourth at 1-under
