WILLISTON, VT (August 21, 2016) -- In a tight final match two-seed Garren Poirier outlasted four-seed Bryan Smith 1 up to win the Vermont Mid-Amateur title at Williston Golf Club.

Throughout the match neither player led by more than one hole and with 14 holes remaining the match was still all-square. Poirier, who claimed the Vermont Mid-Amateur in the past won the 15th hole to take a 1 up lead only to have Smith tie the match again on the next hole.

With two-holes remaining Poirier took the lead for good by winning the 17th hole and then he closed out the match with a halve on the closing hole.

Poirier reached the finals thanks to a 5&4 win against six-seed Chip Ward. The match was all-square after the front nine until Poirier rattled off five wins in a row beginning on the 10th hole.

Smith moved onto the finals via a 19 hole win against 16-seed Jeremy Dolin. After nine holes Smith trailed 3 down before rallying to tie it on the 18th hole and then won it on the first extra hole.
