Austin Hannah's surives a five-shot swing on one hole to repeat as champion
TULSA, Calif (August 2, 2016) -- Austin Hannah successfully defended his Oklahoma Mid-Am title at his home course at Oaks Country Club.
Hannah opened with 65 on Monday and took a two-shot lead into Tuesday's final round. He saw his lead evaporate quickly, however, as playing the wrong ball from the rough on the par-5 seventh hole cost him a triple-bogey eight while his playing partner, Mike Hughnett, made an eagle in the same group. Hughnett went from four shots down to one shot ahead.
“That was a big momentum swing,” Hannah told Golf Oklahoma. “There was a lot of golf left, so I knew that even with the eight I was right there, just a shot or two back.”
Hannah bounced back with a birdie on hole nine while Hughnett bogeyed eight and nine. Hannah would then make nine straight pars to shoot 3-over 74 and win by two shots.
“I had the lead going into the back and just hung on,” Hannah said. “I wasn’t playing my best, but I’m proud of the way I hung in there. I just feel really comfortable on this golf course. I feel it suits my game real well. It has small greens and requires a lot of touch shots.”
Rob Laird of Tulas pulled into second alone at 1-under while Kacey Threet of Grove finished solo third at 1-over 143.
