Konkus and Gibson win Palm Beach Junior-Senior
PALM BEACH GARDENS - Ryan Konkus made all four of their birdies as he teamed with Clyde Gibson to win the ninth annual Palm Beach County Junior-Senior Championship on Sunday (Dec. 19) at the PGA National Golf Club.
The Hobe Sound pairing posted a four-ball stroke play score of two under par 70 on the Squire course for 134, winning by a stroke. They had opened with a modified alternate shots effort of 64 on Saturday for a lead of two.
For Gibson it was his fourth victory in the tournament with as many different partners. He won with Rick Othmer in 1999, with Mike Nealy in 2001, and was a co-champion with Jim Patrone last year when an electrical storm prevented a playoff.
"I guess I must pick good partners," Gibson said with a laugh. "We just try to have some fun. Maybe I relax the guys." It was his 22nd Palm Beach County Golf Association title overall. He was inducted into the PBCGA Hall of Fame in 2003.
Konkus holed a wedge shot from short and right of the sixth green for his most spectacular birdie, an estimated 30 yards or, "about the distance from first to second," said Rick Westwood, who was in the foursome with Konkus and Gibson.
Westwood, of Wellington, and Matt Ribakoff of Jupiter were second among 30 teams in the PBCGA's final tournament of the year with 66-69-135, scoring four birdies and a bogey after opening with 66.
The field was divided into three flights based on first round scores: Other winners were Andy and Rick Spears, first, 138, and Dan Getson and Don Raaen, second, 146.
