Four amateurs finish even-par and are tied for 38th after the first round of the U.S. Women's Open

SAN MARTIN, CA (July 7, 2016) -- The first round of the U.S. Women's Open from CordeValle Golf Club is in the books and four amateurs finished even-par with 71's. Among those in the group are Hye-Jin Choi, Julia Engstrom, Hannah O'Sullivan and Albane Valenzuela. All four players are tied for 38th after the opening day of play.

Hye-Jin Choi opened in 1-over 37 on the front nine as she carded two bogeys and a birdie. On the back nine Choi was solid with a birdie on the 15th to close in 1- under 34.

Julia Engstrom started on the front side and posted two even-par 36's. Engstrom was up and down on the first nine with three birdies and three bogeys. The homeward nine was much steadier as Engstrom birdied one and bogeyed one.

2015 U.S. Amateur champion Hannah O'Sullivan made a remarkable closing nine turn around on Thursday. O'Sullivan started her day with four bogeys on her first five holes before turning in 4-over 40. However, on the back nine O'Sullivan showcased her talent with four birdies to battle back to even-par for the day, thanks to a bogey-free 4-under 32.

Albane Valenzuela was 1-under during her opening nine before shooting a 1-over 37 on the final nine. Valenzuela birdied four holes and bogeyed four throughout the day.
