Ohio State's future looks bright after Alex Wright wins the Women's Southern Amateur

Editors Note: The Women's Southern Golf Association provided this story AUGUSTA, GA (June 24, 2016) -- Ohio State signee Alex Wright captured the Women's Southern Golf Association 101st Amateur Championship with a 2 up win over University of Georgia sophomore Rinko Mitsunaga Friday morning. The finals was a culmination of a great week of golf at West Lake Country Club in Augusta, GA. “Congratulations to all our champions,” said WSGA President Audrey Songy at the conclusion of play Friday. “West Lake Country Club has been a great host for our 2016 event. We would like to thank everyone who made this week a special one for all of us.” Both players finished in the Top 10 in the qualifying round as Mitsunaga shot 71 and Wright posted a 73. The champion’s wins en route to the title came over Cayla Smith in the first round, Hannah Mae Deems in the second round, over Co-Medalist Janet Mao in the quarterfinals and over Fernanda Lira in the semifinals. Capturing the Second Mid-Amateur Championship was local favorite/Augusta resident Laura Coble, who defeated Janie Carpenter of Garland, TX in the title match. Coble, a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, is the second player to hoist the coveted Betty Probasco Championship Trophy. n the Championship Consolation match Lauren Waidner of Fleming Island, GA defeated fellow Georgian Manuela Carbajore of Athens Friday morning. Winning the Championship First Flight was Clara Teixeira of Miramar, FL. She downed Lana Hodge of Monroe, LA in the finals Friday. The First Flight Consolation award went to Jaelyn Tindal of Rock Hill S.C. She downed Taylor Thompson of Baton Rouge, LA in the finals of their bracket. In the Mid-Amateur Consolation Championship match Texas Golf Hall of Famer Anna Schultz of Heath, TX defeated Nancy Gavin of Jackson Gap, AL. Schultz was a finalist for the Mid-Amateur Championship last year.
