Defending champion and top-seed Tyler Ota was among the players to advance to the Round of 32
HONOLULU, HI (June 14, 2016) -- Defending champion and top-seed Tyler Ota was among the players to advance to the Round of 32 at the 108th playing of Manoa Cup. Playing at Oahu Country Club Ota defeated 64-seed Noah Lau 3&2.
Ota and Lau were all-square through eight holes but the defending champion won three of the next four holes to go 3 up after 12 holes. Lau did battle back winning holes 13 and 14, only to see Ota win the 15th and 16th holes to close the match.
As is always the case in match play there were a handful of upsets. The most notable upset was No. 60 Paul L. Loui defeating No. 5 Trevor Arashiro 2 up. One other single digit seed feel and that was No. 9 Adam Quandt getting beat handily by No. 5 Ryan Chang 6&4.
Match play will continue on Wednesday with the Round of 32.
