Cecilia Mourgue D’Algue of France recorded the only subpar round of the championship to earn medalist honors Sunday

St. Simons Island, Ga. (Oct 8, 2006) -– Cecilia Mourgue D’Algue of France recorded the only subpar round of the championship to earn medalist honors Sunday at the 2006 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur, being played at the 5,832-yard, par-71 Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. Mourgue D’Algue, 60, the runner-up at the 1999 championship, had four birdies and two bogeys en route to a 2-under-par 69, seven strokes better than her first-round 5-over 76. “Yesterday morning I was out early and the wind picked up and it was quite cold,” said Mourgue D’Algue. “It turned around nicely. It was one of these days where I got the nice putts in. If I hit one putt a little bit hard, I managed to get the second one in. It was that kind of a day. It was very nice.” It is the first USGA medalist honors for Mourgue D’Algue, a five-time International European Amateur Senior Ladies champion. At the 1999 Senior Women’s Amateur, she lost to seven-time USGA champion Carol Semple Thompson in 19 holes. Mourgue D’Algue is no stranger to Sea Island. She also played in the 2000 championship held on the Seaside Course, where she lost to Thompson in the semifinals, and she and her family are long-time visitors to the resort. “We used to come here for holiday for a week every year,” said Mourgue D’Algue. “This is my favorite course by far.” Nancy Smith, 59, of North Port, Fla., recorded her second consecutive 3-over 73 to finish one shot back. She was disappointed not to earn medalist honors, but happy with her play overall. “I was playing pretty well today and I thought maybe I’d do it,” said Smith. “But I made too many bogeys and not enough birdies on the back side. But I’m very pleased with myself.” Carolyn Creekmore, 54, of Dallas, Texas, the 2004 Senior Women’s champion, and 2000 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur runner-up Anna Schultz, 51, of Rockwall, Texas, both finished three strokes back to easily advance. Defending champion Diane Lang, 51, of Weston, Fla., followed her first-round 8-over 79 with a 77 and also moved on to match play. “I was happier but still not happy,” said Lang, who is trying to become the seventh repeat winner. “My irons were still not good. So I went back to the range and it feels a lot better. I think I figured something out.” Thompson, 57, of Sewickley, Pa., who won four consecutive Senior Women’s Amateurs from 1999-2002, also advanced, as did four-time USGA champion Marlene Streit, 72, of Canada; 1972 U.S. Women’s Amateur winner Mary Budke, 52, of Eugene, Ore.; and 1989 U.S. Mid-Amateur winner Robin Donnelly, 53, of Lake Forest, Ill. First-round leader Ann Lahey, 54, of Kentfield, Calif., who opened with a 1-over 72, had a tougher time Sunday, with an 11-over 83, but still easily advanced. The 2006 Senior Women’s Amateur continues with the first round of match play Monday. The second and third rounds will be played Tuesday and the quarterfinal and semifinal matches are on Wednesday. The championship concludes with Thursday’s 18-hole final match. The USGA Senior Women’s Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
